The seat and largest city is New Hampton. The Cedar River is a major waterway.
It is served by US-18, US-63, US-218/IA-27, IA-24, and IA-346.
It is bordered by Howard, Winneshiek, Fayette, Bremer, Butler, Floyd and Mitchell Counties.
